From there by canoe the tour goes across the mouth of Kingston Harbour to Green Bay and Port Henderson. There the walk continues around the buildings of the second port town opened for Spanish Town in the 18th century with accommodation, bars and mineral baths as reported in Lady Nugent's journal written in 1803.
The first fort to be erected in Port Royal was Fort Charles. It was built in the late 1650-60 and was originally called Fort Cromwell but was renamed Fort Charles. The fort underwent several changes between 1656-1670. In 1667, the fort had 36 guns and by 1765 it had 104 guns and a garrison with 500 men. Spanish Town, city (1991 pop. 110,379), SE Jamaica, on the Cobre River. It is the commercial and processing center of a rich agricultural region, as well as the main rail and highway communications hub for traffic to and from Kingston (the capital) and other parts of Jamaica. Founded c.1525 and formerly called Santiago de la Vega, Spanish Town was Jamaica's leading city after the destruction of Port Royal by earthquake in 1692, but only until Kingston became the capital in 1872. |
